This Juneteenth as we celebrate the day the last slaves were freed in America, we must also be cognizant of the continuing legacies of slavery rooted in the triple evils of racism, economic exploitation and militarism that have been ongoing for centuries. The last five decades of Democratic and Republican Party rule have culminated in a system of modern-day slavery founded on racially discriminatory laws. Jim Crow, segregation, redlining, the War on Drugs, for-profit prisons and mass incarceration serve to further empower and enrich the ruling class.

GPVA Encourages Members to Attend Court Hearing on Ballot Access Lawsuit; Responds to Defendants' Reply to Suit

The Green Party of Virginia (GPVA) encourages its members to attend the upcoming hearing in our lawsuit to waive ballot access requirements due to the pandemic and subsequent public health measures. The hearing is at 9:00 a.m., Friday, June 19, at the Richmond Courthouse: Spottswood W. Robinson III and Robert R. Merhige, Jr., Federal Courthouse, 701 East Broad Street, Richmond, VA 2321.

GPVA FIles Lawsuit Seeking Waiver of Signature Requirement of Ballot Access

The Green Party of Virginia joined this week with additional plaintiffs in the Libertarian Party of Virginia and Independent Green Party to formally file an amended legal complaint and motion for a complete waiver of signature requirements for ballot access for federal offices. Plaintiffs named in the lawsuit include candidates for president and vice president, the U.S. Senate, and the U.S. House of Representatives.

50th Anniversary of Earth Day

On the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, as economies are shut down by the COVID-19 virus, Mother Earth is recovering from the pandemic of man-made environmental destruction for profit. The air and water are clearer; light pollution, habitat loss, and smog have been reduced; and animal populations have rebounded. This is a glimpse into the environmental progress we can make when we place people, planet, and peace over profit.

Governor Northam Chooses Businesses over Virginia Workers, Teachers and State Employees in the Midst of Pandemic

Richmond, VA -- Governor Ralph Northam today placed the interest of businesses over the interests of the working people of Virginia in choosing to suspend multiple pro-worker bills. Northam proposed to delay until May 2021 even the paltry minimum wage raise to $9/hr passed in the 2020 legislative session by the Democratic Party. Essential workers are risking their health and possibly their lives to work during the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead of being denied urgently needed economic support, they should be given additional hazard pay for their critical work.

Dear Berners,

The Green Party welcomes you and this country and the planet need you. Many of us in the Green Party are former Sanders supporters. In 2016 when Bernie endorsed Hillary Clinton, we left the Democratic party and joined the Greens. We were grateful there was a party to turn to that was standing up for everything we had worked and hoped for at a time when we were feeling politically lost.

GPVA Statement on the Novel Coronavirus

On Wednesday, March 11, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the outbreak of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) to be a pandemic. The uncertain nature and health impacts of the virus driving an abundance of caution has already caused a great deal of disruption globally. This disruption will likely continue and worsen in the coming weeks.
